83. Know when to stop

Proverbs 25:16

“Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.”

Much of this week’s post have had to do with starting your future now. There comes a time when we must stop for a minute and reflect on where we are going and where we want to end up. We don’t need to take on too much at once. We don’t want to become overwhelmed in what we like doing. We have to have a balance in life especially if we have a family who depends on us financially and emotionally. Yes, the more we take on, the more we can profit financially. What about the emotional losses that can come from taking on too much. Find time to rest. Find time to speak to your family. Most of all find time for yourself. Don’t get burned out.

“Too much self-centered attitude, you see, brings, you see, isolation. Result: loneliness, fear, anger. The extreme self-centered attitude is the source of suffering.”

Dalai Lama

82. Stop dreaming and do it!

Proverbs 24:27

“Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.”

I used to play the lottery from time to time, especially when it got to a high number. Oh, how I would run through my mind the things I would do with the money. I would give to the church. I would give to charity. I would buy land. I would retire at a young age. I would make the world better. I would do the same thing when I would think of an invention or service I could provide. I was dreaming. It is ok to ponder these things from time to time. Some refer to it as mental masturbation.

If we want to succeed in what we dream of we must try. We can’t express dreams to others and expect them to do it for us. It is nice to get confirmation from others that it is a good idea before we proceed. If you ask others to help you they may say, “yes I want to be part of it”. You can’t hand your idea over to them and keep dreaming. They won’t have the same enthusiasm as you.

If you have an idea then get confirmation from peers, it is good. Get help if you need it. If it is going to succeed, then you must be the one doing most of the work.

“Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” — Ray Kroc

81. Don’t be sold into slavery

Proverbs 23:4

“Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.”

Our goals in life should be enough to sustain us and our immediate families with just enough left over to give to those in need. In the world today, we are all taught to think we have to have it now. When you go to buy clothes or even on amazon they bombard you with marketing for credit cards. If you apply for our credit card we will give you 50% off and so forth on this purchase. They want to trick you into getting into debt so they can chain you to it. They want you to pay interest on what you can’t wait for. Your money should be a slave to you. You shouldn’t be a slave to other people’s money.

“Debt is the slavery of the free”

Publilius Syrus

80. Fail Forward

Proverbs 22:13

“The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.”

I once knew a person who was quite the handy man and knew how to do just about everything around the house. If you had a question about anything whether it be structural, electrical, or plumbing related he could help. Our group always encouraged them to start his own business. They never would do it, finding every excuse to not start. All the signs where lining up for them to do it.

Don’t be like this person. You should at least try. The Most High will put things in your life to direct you in the path in which you should go. A preacher I listen to once said the following, “If GOD wants you to be a barber and you are a preacher then, you will be the most miserable preacher around until you start cutting hair”.

If there is something you enjoy doing and you are good at it. If everyone that cares about you is telling you  should at least try it on the side and has said they would use you from time to time. If everything around you is pointing you in that direction. If you would be happy doing it. Then you should to try. The time is now don’t delay.

“Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward.”

79. Busy hands!

Proverb 21:25

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

Today’s proverb continues in telling us that we need to be ready for that which can happen in our lives. Yes we need to rest. We need to rest every day. Therefore, we have 24hrs in a day. We have 8 hours to earn a living. We have 8 hours for ourselves. We have 8 hours to rest. I spend 3-4 hours every day getting to and from work. That leaves me with a about 4 hours when I get home every day. This is not a lot of time. Some is used for helping my wife and spending time with the kids. I have about two hours a day to work on the homestead Mon-Fri. I have limited weekend time.

This also sounds like excuses so I will get to my point. I do use the little time every day I have to advance to the status of being self-reliant. We cannot wait until we have time to do everything at once. We must eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Don’t let our human nature towards slothfulness kill us. Get started now on your future.

78. Start your future now

Proverbs 20:4

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

All who practice self-reliance should be listening to this. Now is the time to start. The saying, “the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best is now” holds true in today’s proverb. Even King Solomon new this thousands of years ago. Quit waiting on perfection. It will never come. Today’s society has made us think that perfection is need before starting. Nothing on this earth is perfect when you reason this way.

My next project on the home stead is to move things from zone 5 to my zone 1. In South East Texas we have long periods without rain and dragging water hose hundreds of feet a day gets old. Weeding all over the place gets old.

Self-Reliance shouldn’t be hard. Make it easy. Use that weightless knowledge that you have acquired. Work smart not hard.

77. GSD (Get Stuff Done)

Proverbs 19:2

Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

Is there something you know you must do but you are putting it off waiting on perfection? We all have more to do in this life than we think we do. The “Most High” will sometimes GSD through us. It could be that project you need to start. Maybe there is someone else who needs to start on a divine project and it’s you who will inspire them. Sometimes we will be made miserable and restless until we are heading in the direction we need to go.

Start that thing you have been putting off.

76. Zip your Lips

Proverbs 18:7

A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

How many times have you said something and then think to yourself, “why did I do that”? I know I have. Once those words are let go it is nearly impossible to get them back.

I have learned my lesson many times over regarding this subject. I try to ask for clarification before I answer. My wife gets angry with me because I always ask for clarification from her when she ask something of me.

Be careful with what you say. Don’t commit to something unless you know you can absolutely do it.

75. Deception

Proverbs 17:4

A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

We need to really be careful if we listen to those people who try to talk us into doing things that are not good for us. Sometimes we seek those who confirm our thoughts and will offer encouragement towards an action that they know not the consequences. We should always give careful thought before making a big decision or even judgments. In the book of Proverbs it continuously says that those who deceive others will come to ruin and be punished. So go forth and listen and don’t be deceived. Speak your thoughts but don’t deceive those who listen to you.
