7 Increasing the size of your wallet thru self-reliance:

How much do you spend each year on surviving?  What does this include you may ask?  Well let’s look at the consumer price index (CPI).  The CPI is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.  Market Basket includes:  food & beverage, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, recreation, education, communication, and other goods and services such as tobacco, haircuts, & personal services. By looking at the numbers from 2008 to 2016 this index has risen about 18%. How much have your wages risen since then? If you’re like me not much. So how can being self-reliant make your wallet fatter? Well for one thing you can start to grow your own food. There are many ways to do this just google how to grow your own food at your location.  In the first year you will spend more than you save. But as the years come and go you will get better and better at it. Grow heirloom vegetables and grains so you can save seeds from them to plant in the next year. Now go search and GSD and make your wallet fatter.

5 Emotional Fitness in the new age:

What do we do with all the information that goes into our heads daily. We are constantly bombarded with headlines from the TV, Radio, Internet, Friends, and Family. The sources of this information use a great deal of psychology to design it so that it toils with our emotions and makes us go find sources of the information and ultimately leads to advertising money for the news source and hopefully increased sales for the sponsor.

I used to be guilty of getting all worked up about it even until the point of going half crazy. I still do from time to time. I listen to a podcast daily called the Survival Podcast by Jack Spirko. One of the things he mentions is “Proactive Apathy” which is a total lack of interest over that which you cannot control, with full focus and effort applied to that which you can control.

So before getting all hot and bothered ask yourself the following questions:

How does this affect me?

How can I change this?

If it doesn’t affect you, then don’t worry about it. If you can’t change it, then don’t worry about it.

In summary only worry about the things that you have a direct influence over. If it doesn’t fall into the #GSD category set it free.

5 Calming of the spirit

To be self-reliant one must be prepared for all things that can and will happen. I am a Christian by faith and James 2:14-26 tell us faith without works is dead. I live 30 miles inland on the Texas Gulf Coast. I pray every year that we don’t get decimated by a hurricane. Then I start acting. From time to time I start my generator to make sure it is working correctly. I keep my gasoline tanks full. I watch the weather online and on TV to see if there is a possibility of a major storm heading my way. There are so many things to do to be ready for a major storm you can lose your sanity quickly if you wait until the last minute. Also, if you wait to the last minute you will have to deal with people who are acting insane. Do you really want to get in an altercation over a case of bottle water? Hurricane season is upon us. Check your supplies, get ready, talk to GOD, and sleep well.

4 Don’t do it for them teach them

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

When I hear this quote I often think of the sign that you see from time to time at parks that says don’t feed the animals, you can read the rest in the picture I posted. You may say to your self is helpful hurtful? We can apply this to ourselves, friends, and family. My children are just now school aged and often they will ask me to do something for them. For instance, they are at the small Lego age now and these Lego’s come with pictures of different ways to put them together. The bring the picture to me and say daddy make this for me. I think back to this quote and ask them to try it first. So, they go away and in some moments, they come back with the rendition of the picture and it is usually very close. I praise them for their good work and the go away feeling empowered and motivated. In my house “I can’t” is a naughty phrase.

In closing teach yourself, friends, and family to take care of themselves. Not only help but show how and make them self-reliant. They may help you some day.

3 Healing Powers of Dirt

Gardening may help with depression. Some research suggests that getting dirty and coming in contact with some bacteria that naturally occurs in the soil may increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is a natural anti-depressant. Get dirty get happy. Just remember to wash your hands before eating, drinking, or touching your mouth, nose and eyes

2 Shut up and listen

Good morning everyone it is time to rise and shine and get stuff done. We live hectic lives these days, have you tried finding a quiet place to spend at least an hour alone to listen to GOD or even if you don’t believe in GOD then to listen to your inner self? A great time to do this is while working in the Garden. This is a great place to keep restless side of ourselves busy doing a repetitive task while being quiet and listening. This helps me to reset my mind and focus on important things that need to be done while getting stuff done at the same time. Get busy, get quiet, and listen.
